Principal

ACES Principal Dr. Cynthia Reasoner

Mrs. Reasoner

Welcome to Amelia County Elementary School!  I consider it both an honor and privilege to serve our school community as principal. I joined our ACES family in July 2014 as principal and wish to thank our entire school community for their continued support of #AwesomeACES! I love our school and I ROAR with absolute pride for our wonderful students and teachers. Our theme for the 2017-2018 school year is:  "Be Innovative Like ACE: Achieve-Collaborate-Engage!"  We challenge every parent and student to be innovative and do something new or different this school year!

We continue to maintain high expectations for ourselves and “Go the Distance” as educators for each and every student, each and every day.  We continue to provide Title I reading intervention for every student who is not meeting grade level expectations in reading.  We also provide daily guided reading instruction based on the work of Dr. Jan Richardson as well as small group daily math instruction and math stations for spiral review.  We also use the writer's workshop model, in conjunction with Ruth Culham's  6 +1 Writing and the Scholastic Trait Crates, as the basis of teaching student writing.   We recognize the correlation between good writing and good reading, and as our students’ writing improves so will their reading.   We ask for you to please continue serving as our education partner and reading "teacher" at home by making sure that your child reads a minimum of 20 minutes per night.  We believe that practice makes perfect and that one’s reading skills can improve with practice, just like with any sport or activity.  Reading to and with your child is one of the single most important things you can do at home to ensure your child’s success in school.

Since 2014 our school has made dramatic academic progress, having moved from being Accredited with Warning in both reading and math to being fully accredited for the last two consecutive school years.  We continue to make gains in both reading and math student achievement, as measured by improved SOL scores and increased reading levels on the BAS (Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System). We consider maintaining full accreditation status as only a first step with much greater accomplishments yet to come. While we celebrate our past successes we recognize that every year is a new year and our expectations for student outcomes must continue to increase.  Our school's success would not be possible without high expectations, focused instruction, and support from our families at home.

I am presently in my 24th year as a public school educator.  I am a graduate of Liberty University, the University of Virginia, and the University of Mary Washington. I received my Ed.D. in Educational Leadership in May 2017; for my dissertation I studied how elementary teachers use Edmodo, a social networking site for educators, as a community of practice.  My husband and I are proud parents of two middle school age sons (8th grade and 6th grade) who participate in golf, lacrosse, wrestling, cross country/track, and swimming at different times during the year.  During my free time I enjoy cheering my boys on when playing sports, playing golf, working in our yard, spending time with family and friends, and watching movies.  I am also a HUGE fan of the Washington Redskins!  #HTTR!!

A parent is a child’s first and most important teacher.  As such, we welcome the opportunity to partner with you in educating your child.  Please consider volunteering in different capacities within our school, joining our PTA, or serving as one of our school Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students). We also ask for your support in helping us implement our attendance initiative:  #EveryMinuteCounts!  We are committed to providing high quality instruction each and every day and also increase time on instruction.  Thank you in advance for doing your part to ensure that your child arrives to school on time, ready to learn, and remains with us for the entire instructional day unless he or she is sick.
We  welcome you to A.C.E.S. and look forward to all the possibilities that a new school year brings.  Our doors are always open and we are available to assist you with any questions or concerns you may have.   Thank you for your continued support of our wonderful school!
